Sea Containers London
With a design reminiscent of a 1920s transatlantic cruise liner, Sea Containers London is a remarkable hotel where glamour meets brutalism. With rooms, suites and apartments as well as three dining venues and even a spa and cinema, it’s a place to see and be seen.
GS Contracts was immensely pleased then to be asked to complete a project at the hotel, working with the in-house design team to strip out the hotel’s existing gallery area, refurbish it entirely and install a new mezzanine and staircase, creating a new event space called, simply, the Gallery.
In just 12 weeks and after complex structural calculations we created this stunning space which acts as an extension of the cultural area merging art with the Southbank. The Gallery features industrial interiors with exposed full daylight, making an ideal private meeting space.
Located on the ground floor, the space can transform between a communal group check in area with its own reception desk and lounge space, to a reception for up to 120 guests within seconds. For more intimate meetings, the mezzanine, with its brutal metal ceiling ducts and fans, offers a boardroom for up to 22 guests with a breakout area on the lower level where catering is available.
GS Contracts worked under some considerable pressure to a complex structural design which required real flexibility, innovation and attention to detail.
The showstopper of the space is the incredible staircase, with its sumptuous wood and fuchsia pink underside, it’s as eye-catching as the red sole of a certain designer’s high-heeled shoes, and contrasts gorgeously with the industrial ceiling and purple panelled counter. Gold accents in the work area and lighting fixtures add to the luxurious but modern feel.
The majority of the project was conducted around accommodating the staircase and its complicated design. Additional challenges were presented by the design team’s chosen tiling which had to be continued along and lined up in a precise sequence from corridor to hallway to bathroom. Some walling even had to be taken down and set again to get this exactly right!
The result has delighted the client who is over the moon with the versatile space. “GS Contracts worked under some considerable pressure to a complex structural design which required real flexibility, innovation and attention to detail. We are proud of the Gallery’s stunning appearance and quality of finish and were thrilled to have already had opportunity to use the space to host various events, meetings and parties for our clients, including our partners at BAFTA.”
