Lincoln’s Inn

Often our work at GS Contracts is the creation of brand-new spaces or completing refurbishments using the latest materials and concepts, so it was a refreshing change recently when we were asked to regenerate the incredible Members Common Room at the historic Lincoln’s Inn.

The largest and oldest of the four inns of Court, dating back to 1422, this thriving society of barristers, situated on an 11-acre estate of Grade I and Grade II listed buildings, contemporary facilities, and tranquil grounds in central London, has been the setting for scenes from the Harry Potter film series.

GS Contracts was tasked with refurbishing the room, columns and fireplaces of The Members’ Common Room, which is a versatile space used as a restaurant for its members and a venue for receptions and events.

The MCR was created by building a mezzanine floor within the original kitchens of the Great Hall. Opened by Queen Victoria in 1845, the Hall, complete with Minstrels’ Gallery, striking fresco and ceiling of beautifully worked oak, is described as one of the most impressive surviving buildings of its kind in London, and it really is breath-taking!

During our refurbishment, the vaulted ceilings of the MCR were restored to their former glory allowing guests to enjoy the preserved Victorian architecture but creating a contemporary space which caters well to modern requirements with subtle floor lighting and deep rich wood doors.

“GS Contracts have worked incredibly hard … helping us create a stylish and welcoming space for the benefit of our members”

– Philp Ardley, Director of Estates at Lincolns Inn

In keeping with the dark wood so evocatively present, we created a gorgeous, curved bar with beautiful brass work, granite tops and bespoke panels, creating a linen-fold pattern which looks luxurious and yet timeless. The open shelving at the back of the bar provides essential storage but doesn’t block the natural daylight the MCR is blessed with.

Working on this Heritage building was an honour and the results are truly stunning. Mr Philp Ardley, Director of Estates at Lincolns Inn was delighted. “GS Contracts have worked incredibly hard on the recent refurbishment of the MCR, bringing the history of the room sensitively to life, and helping us create a stylish and welcoming space for the benefit of our members”.

We are delighted that our exceptionally high standards of finishing, coupled with the care and attention necessary to work in Grade I Listed buildings allows us the privilege of knowing that the quality of our work stands alongside the original architecture and detailed stonework which once formed part of the Victorian kitchens to create a truly atmospheric venue.
