A modern but elegant space
Café Murano is described by founder and celebrity chef, Angela Hartnett, as the ‘brassier little sister’ of Murano, her Michelin-starred restaurant. Café Murano has branches in St James and Covent Garden, and at the end of last year, opened a third venue in Bermondsey, which GS Contracts was proud to bring to fruition.
Angela is a familiar face on TV, championing simple yet sophisticated food with Italian flair and she has long loved the SE1 area of London where the new café has, after two long years of searching for the right venue, found a home.
GS Contracts is immensely proud to have taken this project from concept to the immaculate finished space, working with Rhea Sullivan Design, RML Architecture, Angela herself and our friends at CCE Group designing and creating the kitchens, we have created both the perfect working environment for a fast and effective flow of service, and a relaxing and tranquil dining area in the bustling city.
Although the end result is a source of immense pride to the team we’d be fibbing if we claimed that this was the easiest of projects, of course – a venue on the ground floor of an existing hotel meant any issues had to be resolved with the neighbours firmly in mind, and without eating into the allotted project duration. Additionally, as absolutely everything in the space was bespoke for the client, we created all the joinery, screens and all metal work from scratch.
And wow, was it worth it! The café is a modern but elegant space combining wood and leather furniture in shades of taupe, orange and steel blue with LED lighting, industrial style metallic ceiling ducting, blocks of black and white tiling, a wood panelled bar which offers counter dining and an open kitchen with plenty of striking metal overhead storage.
The café also offers an intimate semi-private dining room, with banquet seating, taupe curtains and mood lighting, and the food, of course, is out of this world!
Angela is very much hands-on with the cafes and restaurants she has established, and we know she is delighted with the look and quality of finish we achieved on this project.
