Como Gardens

Short turnarounds can be a challenge at any time especially when you add extra Covid-19 restrictions into the mix.

But at GS Contracts we love a challenge and when we were asked to carry out a complete refit of a restaurant in High Street Kensington, London, in just six weeks we jumped at the chance!

Brothers Alberto and Arian Zandi had clearly been impressed with the GS Contracts team when we fitted out their Latin American and Mediterranean bar and restaurant Zuaya a while ago.

So, when they decided to branch out and open an Italian next door, we were the natural choice.

Bringing a taste of Italy in just six weeks

The Como Garden menu is based around Italian tapas combining the most popular dishes from all regions of Italy. Pasta is a speciality, with all pasta handmade daily by the restaurant’s very own pasta chef.

Both the menu and the décor at Como Garden are inspired by the gardens of Lake Como. Think of a cool, sophisticated colour scheme, luscious planting throughout and the odd renaissance-style statue.

The restaurant even features its very own olive tree between the circular seating, transporting diners to the gardens of Italy without the need to board a flight.

Work began on the refit early November and was completed bang on time ready for the grand opening just six weeks later.

Navigating Covid-19 restrictions

With Covid-19 restrictions in force the number of trades onsite at any one time had to be restricted to allow for social distancing.

Project manager, Simone Pinducciu, said: “It was all about timing and organising the schedule so that every single task could be carried out in a way that was safe for everybody. We were very specific about keeping the number of people onsite at any time to a minimum.”

The client had opted to select their own subcontractors for a number of tasks, but asked GS Contracts to oversee the management of the subcontractors which helped in terms of scheduling who was onsite at each point during the project.

Simone added: “Considering the times we are living in, and the restrictions we needed to follow it was a real achievement to complete this project in just six weeks and the feedback from the client was very positive.”

We were delighted to work with designers Harp Interiors on this project, having formed a great working relationship with the company over the years.
